Been coming here since the 90s and it is still my favorite banh mi place. In my opinion they have the best pate as it is on the more peppery and best in house made mayonnaise. I love that they make a majority of their products compared to other delis that get them from random vendors throughout the week. Because they make their own stuff, the quality and freshness can't compare to other places. I used to frequent the Senter location but since that has been closed down I still make a journey to capital Ave to stock up whenever I'm in the area!
Their chicken sausage egg banh mi #20 seems to be their most popular item and it did not disappoint. Generous and filling and decently priced at $8 even though the menus still say $6.50. Cash only type of place. Other than that it's your typical Vietnamese sandwich shop inside. I was the only person there the entire time I went and ate my sandwich and it came out within 5 minutes of ordering. I'm not sure if it's usually more packed with people but I did go at 11am on a Saturday and it was empty. Did not see a bathroom inside the restaurant.
Banh mi!!!! Omg, came here yesterday to try it out & this is the real deal. Banh mi is so delicious - I had the grilled pork & not only was it good, they don't skimp on the meat & the bread is amazing! Can't wait to come back for another fix. Fast & friendly service
We're visiting San Jose for a few days and have had Vietnamese food at different restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is by far the most delicious and authentic place that we've visited. Looking at the items for picking (in pictures), they looked exactly like how I had remembered growing up in Ho Chi Minh City. The dishes were very authentic and tasty. We highly recommend the fish cakes.
My go to place for banh mi. I'm however, one of those weirdos who want just a pate sandwich with all the veggies. They really do pack it on and the pate is absolutely delicious. They also sell little plates to go and have a hot cabinet of different foods which are equally as delicious. They also make beef jerky and sausage, which is also very good. (Definitely cook the sausage when cooking your rice in the rice cooker. So good!) I would eat these sandwiches every day! (That and because I really like their pate ) They're also open early, which is amazing because when you get a craving for banh mi at 6am, they are open!
Really good sandwiches here. I just tried this place and got the grilled pork sandwich (banh mi thit nuong). Overall, a decent and authentic sandwich. At first, I did not think the sandwich would be amazing. Based on the aesthetics, the color of the meat looked more pale. Personally, I would always think that a darker and charred looking piece of meat is more appealing. However, the meat tasted good. It was not extremely savory and packed with a lot of flavor, but it tasted good and standard. I like the cuts/slices of the pork as well. There was a decent amount of fat on it as well, but not too much. The fat tasted good. The texture of the fat was soft. Not chewy at all. The bread was good. When you bite into the bread, you could see the dough inside. You could tell that the dough has risen properly. The bread is soft, fluffy, and chewy in a good way. A soft chew. When you compare this place to Lee's Sandwiches, the bread at Lee's is overtly hard and crunchy. You don't want that. The bread should be soft. The crust could be crispy, but Thanh Huong's crust is not crispy, which is fine. When comparing this to Duc Huong, Duc Huong's bread is better. However, perhaps it is because Duc Huong has garlic bread, and the bread feels oily or buttered. Sometimes, you don't want that. Thanh Huong is a place where you would go to, to get an authentic and decent sandwich. It passes the test overall and it makes you satisfied. As I was eating the sandwich, the flavors and texture felt better than average. It's not boring. So I give this place a 4. Would definitely come back.
Best viet sandwich in the South Bay!! I got the classic banh mi thit nguoi (cold cuts) and my cousins got a cooked meat sandwich. They were DELICIOUS--cousins were also pleasantly shocked. Better than Lee's (commercialized, thin baguette) and Thanh Huong (I really like this place too) but the bread here is SO fresh and airy and delicious. We all loved the bread. Meat ratio was top tier, wish I had more veggies (lol). Coffee was also strong and delicious. Service was good--workers are straight to the point and quick. Ambiance could be better but it's a typical lil viet shop/"corner store" I'd say where they sell food but also pre-packaged foods here and there. They had seating and AC so cant complain!
I've been here many times and have tried several different things. From the pre-made dishes to the sandwiches and noodle soups...it's all really delicious and economical. My favs are the grilled pork banh mi, grilled chicken banh mi, spring rolls, egg rolls, bun rieu, banh Xeo, and Bo Kho. I think they blacked out all the prices on their menu because they keep having to increase them to keep up with inflation while their menu items have stayed the same all these years. As of this post on 4/7/24, a Banh Mi is $8. I'm pretty sure it will increase soon. So go get yourself a delicious banh mi on your next lunch break!
TL;DR: - a hole-in-the-wall establishment with authentically made and modestly salted dishes. soups are a hit or miss but overall it's a great place to stop by for homey Vietnamese food on a dime. parking: - a small parking lot but it's more of a take-out spot so parking spots quickly open up. wait time: - about 5 minutes. ambiance: - a hole-in-the-wall establishment that services your usual Vietnamese dishes and treats. food: [Worth It] - ca kho: perfectly salted! would get this again if in the area. - beef stew: came with carrots, tendon, and beef! very hearty and filling. - baguettes: freshly made and a steal of a price. - pickled carrots and radish (dua mon): these are traditionally made to be eaten with the banh tet. this by far was one of the best dua mons I've ever tasted! And it comes with a glass mason jar too. - stir-fried tofu: well-marinated and tasty. - stir-fried bamboo shoots: not overly marinated as you can taste the fresh bamboo shoot. - stir-fried chayote: crunchy and made for a great side. - chicken drumsticks: well marinated and cooked! definitely one of my favorite dishes here so far! [Good to Try Once] - canh chua: a bit too bland but great if you're just looking for a side soup for a stronger meal. - banh tet: sadly I've had better as the meat here was minimal and dry. - thinly sliced thit kho: this was dry but well marinated
